Sheffield is a public research university in South Yorkshire, and its Kazakhstan page documents a route most universities do not address: the vocational one. 'Applicants who have completed the Diploma of Specialised Secondary Education (Diplom o Srednem Spetsialnom Obrazovanii) with good grades at a vocational college in Kazakhstan will be considered for admission to year one of our undergraduate programmes.' That is direct entry, with no foundation year, for a student who took a Kazakh vocational college route rather than academic upper secondary. For other applicants Sheffield routes to the University of Sheffield International College, which 'provides International Foundation Year programmes specifically for international students who want to progress to the University of Sheffield', in two streams: Business, Social Sciences and Humanities; and Science and Engineering.
