Lingnan University

Lingnan University traces its origins to 1888 in Guangzhou, was re-established in Hong Kong in 1967 and gained university status in 1999. It is Hong Kong's liberal arts university. It is the cheapest funded route in Hong Kong, and by a clear margin. Non-local tuition is 175,000 Hong Kong dollars for 2026-27 and hostel fees for funded undergraduate programmes started at around 12,100 in 2025-26 — roughly 187,100 before personal expenses, against 249,000 in tuition alone at the University of Hong Kong. That comparison is the most useful comparison available in Hong Kong, because Belt and Road eligibility is identical at both. A nominated student pays nothing either way; an unnominated one pays 42% less here. The model is the other distinguishing feature: small classes, a residential campus and broad study before specialisation. For a student arriving alone that produces more faculty contact and a more structured environment than a large research university offers. The trade is scale and subject range — no medicine, no engineering, and a smaller alumni network.
