Rochester Institute of Technology

RIT is a technical university where computing and engineering account for roughly half of all bachelor's degrees — 24.6% computer and information sciences and 24.2% engineering — with visual and performing arts a surprising third at 10%, reflecting its film, photography and design schools. Its defining structural feature is the Cooperative Education programme: paid full-time work terms built into the degree, which is why the four-year graduation rate is low at 29% while the six-year rate reaches 72%. A Kazakh applicant should read that gap as co-op rather than as difficulty. RIT admitted 67% of international applicants against 71% overall, so the international disadvantage is unusually small. It is also one of the few US universities that offers both need-based and non-need-based institutional aid to non-residents and actually funds it at scale: 437 international undergraduates hold awards averaging USD 25,163. RIT provides dedicated housing for international students and runs Army ROTC jointly with the University of Rochester.
